So today was the big day: Deep sea fishing! We packed sandwiches, snacks and beer. We bought a cooler and ice packs so we could bring our big catch home on the plane. Doused in sunscreen we headed to Bud N Mary’s Marina.
We pulled into the marina and walked in noticeably out of place among salty, weathered fishermen. We found our captain, gear in tow, and he promptly asked us if we had ever been out on a deep sea trip before. “No,” we replied. “Well, today’s not your day. It’s just too rough out there.” Drat! We were concerned about the weather and had heard warnings of 5-7 foot swells but were determined to catch the big one (Dan had his heart set on landing a marlin). Deflated, we sought an alternate, less awesome activity.
So, we went to a museum, the Diving Museum. It was actually pretty interesting to see how diving has evolved from sinking to the ocean floor with your head in a bell to the deep sea alien suits that are used in extreme adventures today.
We then went to park on the ocean, casually ate our packed lunch and sipped some beer while we watched kite surfers revel in the same foul weather that spoiled our trip.
This was our last night in the Keys so we decided to head to happy hour at a Tiki Bar, and watch the sun set over the marina. After that, we went to Hog Heaven for dinner and more drinks. We were again the youngest of the crowd (something we were used to by now) and sipped beer listening to the live music, a 60s cover band, and remembering the good times we had in the Florida Keys.
